Job Interview Techniques: It's The Little Things That Count
By Joe McDermottWhen you have been invited to an interview it is obvious from your resume that you can do the job as good as the next candidate.
In making a decision as to who gets the job the interviewer often has to refer to some small detail relating to an answer given, a personality trait or something in the appearance and bearing of the candidate.
It can often be the smallest thing which gives a candidate the winning edge or vice versa some small mistake made which loses them the job.
Simple Interview Techniques To Help You Win
Here are some simple interview techniques which will help you make a big impression.
- Remove your overcoat and place either on a hook or spare chair nearby
- Put your briefcase, handbag, dossier on the floor beside you but not on your lap
- Switch off your mobile phone, this is preferable to having a silent but vibrating alert
- Sit comfortably with hands gently folded in your lap or on top of your legs
- Make eye contact with the interviewer
- Smile as this shows openness and confidence
- If in a panel interview make eye contact with the person asking the question but address your answer to all
- Ask for clarification if you are unsure of the meaning of a question
- Remember your interviewer's name and use it during the interview
- Act natural and most importantly be yourself
While these may seem very obvious, it is surprising how many job interview candidates forget some of these very simple interview techniques. Either through lack of knowledge, inexperience or straight forward arrogance many candidates make some small mistake which ends up losing the job offer.
